Maurice is a Tortoiseshell Tabby that appears at A Litter of Cats Who Love Each Other. She was named after Maurice, a Byzantine emperor and successful general who started many conflicts during his reign. She has two kittens, Justin and Theo, who were named after two of the emperor Maurice's sons. Maurice's time at the feeder since having kittens has been defined by frequent conflict; Maurice now frequently chases away and fights cats so her fat children can eat. Maurice was first sighted by the global community on July 24, 2024.

Behavior

Before having kittens, Maurice was an occasional visitor to the feeder. She was chill and didn't do anything notable during her visits. After having her kittens, however, her behavior changed dramatically. She became territorial over the feeder, regularly chasing away cats who tried to eat, even if she didn't plan on eating in the moment. She enjoyed sitting on the roof to keep an eye out for cats. Her behavior has caused almost all of the regulars at the feeder to behave more nervously, especially when food is dropped.

Despite being aggressive toward other cats, she is very tender toward her own children. She almost never pushes them out of the way to eat, and often lets them eat first when food is dropped. She enjoys relaxing with her kittens, especially Theo, who is more of a snuggler than his sister.

Maurice will eat both chicken snacks and kibble, but she has a deep love for chicken snacks. While on lookout, she will run into the feeder if she hears snacks being dropped. She once had lots of fun licking chicken snack dust off her kitten's head.

Appearance

Maurice is a Tortoiseshell Tabby. She looks very similar to Brutus. The quickest way to tell them apart is by looking at their noses; Brutus has a thick, dark stripe going down her nose, while Maurice does not. In addition, Maurice's back has almost a completely Tortoiseshell pattern while Brutus's back has some hint of tabby stripes on it. Maurice has big bubble eyes that make her look very cute and innocent, which can be unsettling to see after seeing her aggressively chase cats from the feeder. Her tail is striped.

Sightings

July 2024

• July 24, 2024:
  • Around 7:20 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying at the feeder, eating kibble. When chicken snacks were dropped for her, she immediately began eating those.
  • Around 8:35 PM (LFT), Maurice entered the feeder after hearing kibble drop.
• July 25, 2024: Around 2:30 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen very slowly approaching the feeder, after having laid outside for some time. Once inside, she began eating kibble. A little while later, she jumped back, startled, when lots of chicken snacks were dropped for her.
• July 27, 2024: Around 2:25 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen cautiously approaching the feeder. She eventually entered and ate kibble.

August 2024

• August 2, 2024: Around 9:00 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen eating kibble while making silly faces.
• August 18, 2024: Around 8:45 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen relaxing outside the feeder while George ate inside. A few minutes later, after George left, she entered the feeder and began eating.

December 2024

• December 15, 2024: Around 3:15 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen with her kittens for the first time. She laid down, looking outside, while the kittens sat behind her. Maurice and Theo, the orange kitten, continued laying in the feeder while Justin, the black kitten, left the feeder to explore.
• December 17, 2024: At 1:44 PM (LFT), Maurice approached the feeder and hissed at Dan and Gareth, who were inside. After Dan fled a couple of minutes later, Maurice and Gareth continued hissing at each other while Maurice slowly inched toward Gareth. Eventually, while Gareth was laying on the ground between the feeder and the tarp, Maurice lunged at him, causing Gareth to flee. Maurice then looked around the feeder and ate some kibble.
• December 18, 2024:
  • Around 7:50 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen sitting in front of the empty bowl.
  • Around 11:25 AM (LFT), Maurice began a reign of terror that lasted over an hour. First, she ran into the feeder after hearing chicken snacks drop and began eating. A few minutes later, when Mack showed up, she chased him away. After eating, she jumped up onto the roof. Around noon, an unknown cat (possibly Tob) appeared and tried to eat, but Maurice jumped down from the roof and chased the cat away. Ten minutes after that, her two kittens were seen walking outside while she ate, but the kittens did not enter the feeder. Around 12:30, Bob appeared and tried to eat, but Maurice chased Bob away.
• December 18, 2024: Around 12:10 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen sitting outside the feeder while Theo sat in front of the bowl and Justin sat inside it. Maurice entered the feeder after Justin left, and laid down behind Theo while he ate.
• December 24, 2024: Around 5:30 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen with her head in the bowl. A minute later, she left the feeder and laid down outside while her kids ate. She meowed a lot while they ate. A few minutes later, after Justin got chicken snacks dropped on her, Maurice licked the chicken snack dust off her head.
• December 25, 2024: Around 11:50 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen eating from the feeder while Theo sat next to her. A few minutes later, Theo started meowing and looking up at the roof, and Maurice went outside to investigate. Shortly after the two left, Theo was discovered to have been meowing at George, who was sitting on the roof during their visit and jumped down once they were gone.
• December 26, 2024: Around 10:05 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen sitting in front of the empty bowl while Theo stood in the crack between the feeder and the ground outside. A few minutes later, Maurice laid down outside the feeder and began meowing at a cat off-camera. She eventually chased after the cat.
• December 27, 2024: Around 6:15 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying toward the back of the feeder while Justin ate. When Justin finished eating, Maurice got up and ate as well.
• December 29, 2024:
  • Around 6:30 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying toward the back of the feeder while her children ate.
  • Around 5:00 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying on the new rug while Theo meowed loudly at the empty bowl.
• December 30, 2024: Around 5:45 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying in the feeder with Theo. Food was dropped for the two, but they ignored it.

January 2025

• January 1, 2025: Around 3:15 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying in the feeder while Theo ate.
• January 3, 2025: Around 3:35 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying outside the feeder while her kids hung out inside. When food was dropped, she continued laying outside while her kids ate. When George arrived and laid down outside the feeder, Maurice moved inside and laid down next to her kids. She groomed Justin while Theo stood between them. When food was dropped again, all three of them ate. George moved closer to the feeder, but Maurice gave him a look and he sat back down. Around 4:00, Sans could be seen lying in wait through a crack in the tarp. Maurice spotted him and left the feeder.
• January 4, 2025: Around 12:40 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen hanging out in the feeder with Justin. She laid down for a minute, giving the back camera a good stare in the process. She left Justin in the feeder around 12:50.
• January 6, 2025: Around 4:15 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying in the feeder while her kids ate. Soon after, she saw an unknown cat outside and began growling at them. A minute later, she chased after them.
• January 7, 2024: Around 3:50 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying in the feeder while her kids ate. George was laying just outside the feeder with them.
• January 9, 2025: Around 8:15 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying outside the feeder while Theo laid on the small piece of rug that hadn't been pushed out of the feeder. When snacks were dropped, she ran in and began eating; she eventually let Theo squeeze in and have some food as well.
• January 10, 2025: Around 3:50 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying outside the feeder while her kids waited in front of the empty bowl for food. Eventually, she laid down next to them in the feeder.
• January 12, 2025: Around 5:00 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen approaching the feeder while the silver tabby kitten was inside. The kitten, after growling at Maurice, ran away.
• January 14, 2025: Around 2:50 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying outside the feeder while George laid inside.
• January 20, 2025: Around 5:55 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen scaring the silver tabby kitten out of the feeder.
• January 21, 2025: Around 5:10 AM (LFT), Maurice approached the feeder while Theo ate. She then laid down just outside the feeder.
• January 23, 2025: Around 5:25 PM (LFT), Maurice arrived at the feeder, scaring away Dan and Mack in the process. She began eating the small amount of kibble that was in the bowl, and Justin soon joined her.
• January 25, 2025: Around 7:40 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying outside the feeder. Her kids, who were able to get through the recently installed insulated tarp, ate inside the feeder.
• January 27, 2025: Around 3:35 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen eating alongside Justin while Theo laid in between them, looking kind of squished. After eating, Maurice sat along the back of the feeder, and her kids relaxed around her.
• January 28, 2025: Around 4:10 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying in the feeder while Theo slept beside her.
• January 30, 2025: Around 11:15 AM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying in the feeder while Theo ate. Justin soon joined them both.
• January 31, 2025: Around 2:15 PM (LFT), Maurice was seen laying next to Theo in the feeder. Justin joined them both soon after and began eating. While Justin ate, Maurice began grooming Theo so hard his fat body shook as she licked him. Justin and Theo then both nursed from her before the three all laid down and relaxed.
